Book of Atem is All41 Studios taking a swing at the classic book formula, except this time the reels sit in a sunlit Egyptian garden rather than a dusty tomb. Honestly, it works.

As always, our focus lands squarely on the RTP, because this particular slot has more variation hiding in it than most players realise.

First, take a look at which casinos pay out the most across their full game library:

We open the game at every casino and read the RTP setting straight from the help file. The list is kept current from our own database.

Three RTP levels and why they matter

Book of Atem ships in three versions: 96.45%, 94.01% and 92.05%. The casino picks one, and nobody sends you a polite notice when you land on the worst of them.

That is a 4.4 percentage point gap between best and worst. Spin $1 a thousand times and the theory says roughly $44 more stays in the casino's pocket, purely because of where you signed up. Not exactly pocket change.

RTP always plays out over an enormous number of spins, so it tells you nothing about tonight. Over the long haul, though, it is one of the very few things you actually control.

Hit frequency and how it feels

Hit frequency sits around 30%, so a win roughly every third spin. Plenty of those barely cover the stake, because volatility is high and most of the payback is locked away inside the free spins.

How Book of Atem plays

The layout is textbook: 5 reels, 3 rows and 10 fixed paylines. Wins pay left to right starting from reel one.

One touch we like is that the premium symbols already pay from two in a row, while the card royals need three. Stakes run from $0.10 up to $25 per spin.

The book (wild/scatter)

200x

The Pharaoh pays 1x for two, 7.5x for three and 100x for four before topping out at 500x. The book acts as both wild and scatter and pays wherever it lands.

Free spins and the expanding symbol

Three books anywhere on the reels award 10 free spins. Extra scatters add nothing here, so three is every bit as good as five.

Before the round begins, one regular symbol is picked at random to become the expanding one. It does not need to sit on adjacent reels to pay, which is the whole charm of book slots. Retriggers are on the table too.

The 5,000x ceiling requires an expanding Pharaoh covering the entire screen. At max stake that is $125,000. Rare? Very. Impossible? No.

The studio behind it

All41 Studios is an Estonian outfit working exclusively with Microgaming, now trading as Games Global. Book of Atem arrived in 2020 and remains their most played release by a comfortable distance.

Our take on Book of Atem

Original it is not, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. But the artwork is warmer and friendlier than most book slots, and the soundtrack has kept us spinning longer than intended more than once.

What costs it points is the RTP spread. Any game that can be served up at 92.05% demands that you pick your casino carefully, or you spend the whole session climbing a hill you did not need to climb.
